The rules of the code was that all black slaves were personal property of the white owners, slaves could not assemble together for weddings or dances, slaves who were caught running or breaking any rules could get their ears cut off or be killed and the code gave any white planters the right to shoot the black slaves who they thought were breaking the rules at any given time. During this time rebels burned more than 1000 plantations and killed hundreds of whites. During April of 1792 the french government issued that all free people of color were given rights of citizen. Spain and Britain wanted to stay out of the issues with france as they did not want to start a war, but they were scared that the revolutionary ideas would spread across to Spanish Santo Domingo and British Jamaica. Early 1793, rebel leaders joined spanish forces against the french, one of these leaders were Toussaint Louverture. He ended slavery, banned voodoo and made people catholic, all people of Saint Domingue were French citizens, large estates, people had to work a few hours on plantations ignorer to keep the economy up and running and Louverture made himself Governor for life.Louverture sent his top general Jean Jacques Dessalines to Defeat Rigaud’s army. Louverture wouldn’t have won if it weren’t for the treaties he signed with Britain and the US, because they gave him money for him to supply his troops with food weapons. The war of knives was against Louverture’s army of black soldiers against Andre Rigaud’s army of mulatto soldiers. This was was started because both Andre and Louverture had economic interests. The Affranchis wanted to preserve their economic privileges while the black were petrified that if the Affranchis won that slavery would be reinforced and inequality would return. Louverture have control over the north and west and Rigaud had control of the south. Louverture was smart and he prevented any supplies reaching Andre and his army for 5 months. Many of Napoleon’s soldiers left the French armies and joined the insurrection which was a violent revolt against the government. Later Dessalines began to burn as much plantations and farms as possible which would end up being a huge mistake later on as a lot of damage was done.Dessalines was credited for creating the Haitian flag, he did this by cutting out the white fabric from the French flag but he kept the red and blue. The red and blue represents the unity of black and mulattoes against the blacks. Dessalines gained the colonies independence and published the Declaration of Independence, and he also restored the original name Hayti created by the natives the Tainos who perished due to slavery.Once Napoleon found out that Dessalines crowned himself emperor, he managed to convince countries like England, the US and Spain not to trade with them anymore. He managed to accomplish this by telling these countries that they would be trading with former black slaves. So he successfully managed to push Haiti out the picture diplomatically and commercially, and since Haiti burned all the plantations to get the French out, they did not have any back bone to fall upon so they shot themselves in the foot when they thought of that plan, and to further worsen Haiti’s problems, King Louis X made Haiti pay 22 billion dollars in today money for all the damages done to the plantations, which Haiti complied thinking that they would be recognized and they also wanted to end French aggression. This debt took 80% of Haitis annual income which they finally paid off in 1947.
