The push and dig method will
be used for installation which is also the most common method of piling when an
excavator is used. As a requirement, two fames will be used in the excavation
on each of the side where the abutments will eventually be constructed to
support the piles. The sheets will be pushed ahead of the excavator bucket and a
driving cap. Hydraulic support frames will progressively be lowered into
position as the excavation progresses to restrain the sheets. Generally, a
minimum toe in ahead of formation level is specified. Excavation stability is
normally dependent upon the depth of the sheet penetration beneath formation
level and the correct locations of the frames within the dig. This method of
installation is much preferred by contractors for being cheap and requiring the
minimum plant and accessories. The achievable sheet penetration is dependent on
the ground type and strength of the sheet being installed. Driving may be more
difficult in problematic ground, such as very hard rock. A high degree of site
control will be needed for this method due to the combination of correct sheet
toe and pumping out the frames at the correct level. The excavator will pre-dig
to a maximum of 1 meter if the ground is stable, this will be discussed further.
The pitching shackle will then be secured to the excavator handling point. Once
access will have been gained to the handling point of the sheet pile, the
shackle pin mechanism will be activated, and the shackle jaw will be positioned
over the handling point. The shackle pin will then be fully closed so that the
pin is fully engaged. The anti-snag rope ring will then be looped over the hook
and the rope will be laid flat within the pan of the sheet. All frames will
then be lowered, two on each side on top of each other before pitching the
sheets. The sheets will then be lifted over the excavation and positioned to
where they will be driven. The pitching shackle will then be removed and before
driving the sheet, a pile cap will need to be installed on top of the sheet and
once installed the driving operation can commence once the sheet pile is
aligned and gently pushed downwards. Once all the sheets are installed and
